Today we share a little Q&A with Woodlot Co-Founder, Sonia Chhinji, on how this blend became one of the first of our collection and why it is so meaningful, to not only us, but so many nature lovers beyond the Woodlot fam...
US: What do you love most about the Cascadia blend?
SONIA: I have such a love for this blend. It was inspired, of course, by spending time in nature, and specifically out in the woods. We hear a lot from Canadians who have made their home abroad or on the East Coast, that this scent reminds them of where they grew up, which is a really special experience, and one that we feel honoured to have created for so many. “I feel like I’m back at home when I light this candle” is something I hear from people all the time, and it’s always been one of my favourite pieces of feedback.
US: That is special! What sort of experiences or rituals from before Woodlot or around the time that you started the company do you associate with this scent?
SONIA: Nature has been my greatest teacher and healer. I find myself constantly inspired and grounded when I can consistently spend time outdoors. I love biking along the seawall, going on trail walks or hikes, either solo or with the fam. We’re so lucky to be located in a city that allows us to access nature right in our backyard, and experience all four seasons. People here are really inspired to get outside and engage with nature, and I think it’s so impactful on mental health. I personally really miss those things during periods where I’m not able to get out as much, so I’m always reaching for this scent at home or at work when I’m feeling cooped up.
US: It’s so interesting that you and Fouad had such specific intentions with each blend and that you were able to create scents that mean the same thing to other people as they do to you. Have you ever gotten feedback that surprised you?
SONIA: Since a lot of our customers are women, still today, but especially early on, we noticed really quickly that this scent was loved by both men and women. This wasn’t totally surprising, but more so felt really kismet. Fouad and I really wanted to create scents that could be loved by all, and have a collection where there was something for everyone. Cascadia is that scent that people can love together. We notice a lot of couples and families opt for this scent and I think this is because so many people bond over the activities they enjoy together, which often take place outside and in nature, so I think this scent brings them back to those memories, and I love that. I also once walked into a restaurant and had a complete stranger comment that I smelt like her favourite scent - ‘Cascadia by Woodlot’.

US: That’s amazing! Cascadia is also a favoured blend among different businesses. There’s a number of studios and clinics that diffuse this scent daily. Did you ever dream it would be so popular?
SONIA: I like that the different blends are popular for different reasons. A core value of our company is rituals, so the fact that people find each blend so specific to creating a desired atmosphere or environment really brings that dream to a reality. Some of our scents tend to be better loved during specific seasons, which is great, but I think one of the reasons businesses select Cascadia, is because it’s a desirable scent year-round. It’s especially popular during the holidays, but it’s a consistent seller throughout every season. We worked on Cascadia and Recharge around the same time, and our focus was to have our first four scents encapsulate a few different scent experiences. All of our scents are rooted in nature, but we wanted to specifically create that experience of being out in the woods, or mountains, in a scent.
US: Well, you nailed it! What’s your favourite way to enjoy this scent currently?
SONIA: I am a huge fan of the Cascadia soap bar. There’s nothing like a forest-spa-like bath experience. But I also love burning Cascadia and Recharge candles at the same time - allowing different candles scents to burn simultaneously creates such a beautiful scent experience.
