Daily Rituals // Hand Care

Whether we’re striking a match to light a candle or turning our palms upwards while seated in meditation, our hands often play a significant role in our rituals.

Over the centuries, it has been with our hands that we’ve offered help, given blessings, greeted one another, and communicated good faith.

Our hands empower us, protect us, nourish us, and connect us.  It is with our hands, that we have crafted the world around us.
“The striking of a match is a symbolic act of transformation.
You can’t light a match without friction.
It’s that unique combination of friction and tension by human touch
that takes a creative idea and breathes life into it,
taking it from imagination to its greatest potential.”

Today we invite you to show some love to your hands by incorporating a few rituals that favor them as the end, rather than the means - and unburden your mind at the same time.

Hand Washing

Rustic and ritualistic, a soap bar is perhaps the most essential and consistent staple in your daily routine.  Rooted deeply in family traditions from the Mediterranean coast, Woodlot soaps are the ultimate in simplistic purity.  Each bar is a nourishing blend of olive oil, avocado oil, and coconut oil, with coconut and shea butters that make for a rich lather, lush moisture, and pure cleansing.

We believe in small, simple steps throughout the day that help you relax, pause, and reset.  There’s no better trigger than a ritual as consistent as handwashing paired with a scent that takes you to your happy place.  Perhaps the exotic patchouli and refreshing fir in our Cascadia blend is the perfect way to check out of your daily grind, or maybe our Flora bar can help you escape into floral bliss for a few moments.  Whichever scent appeals to you, close your eyes and allow your mind to rest and find ease as you cleanse, rinse, and gently pat your hands dry.

Hand Massage

The act of self massage is a subtle, but effective wellness ritual. The simple action of rubbing lotion on your skin is a form of self soothing, and stimulates circulation as well as cell generation.  Daily moisturizing quenches the skin, prevents aging, and nourishes the skin with the healing benefits of natural ingredients.

There’s no right or wrong when it comes to self massage.  After applying your favorite lotion to your hands, try using the thumb of one hand to rub the palm of the other in circular motions, with light pressure.  Spend some time on each finger as well, pulling from knuckle to finger tip. Focus on the release of tension in the body. Pay attention to your hands throughout the day.  If you notice your hands are clenched, find a moment for this stress relieving ritual.

Hand Relief

As we are currently washing and sanitizing our hands more than usual, certain ingredients or even just excess water might leave our hands feeling dry, irritated, and raw.  While we typically favor the face when it comes to skincare, a little bit of your favorite facial care products can go a long way towards renewing and revitalizing your hands as you sleep.

Before you get under the covers at night, apply a drop or two of our Rose Water Toner to the back of one hand and carefully spread this hydrating formula evenly over any dry spots with your fingertips.  Once absorbed, apply a small amount of our Chamomile + Shea Moisturizer the same way and let this absorb.  This combination of hydration and nutrients will help relieve your skin and improve dryness overnight.  Allow the calming scents of rose and chamomile to ready you for sleep. This might be an excellent opportunity for a gratitude practice or prayer.

We’d like to remind you again that there’s still a few days left to donate to One Girl Can through the purchase of any of skincare product.  20% off all proceeds from our skincare line for the month of March will go towards rebuilding Ushirika School.  Please find our recent blog on One Girl Can to learn more.

Sending you love & light,
