It’s that time of year! We’re heading straight into the thick of the holiday season and with social engagements, family commitments and cheeky holiday cocktails around every corner, it’s common for stress to take over, while self-care is relegated to the backseat.
That stress doesn’t do you any favours though, and chronically high, unmanaged stress levels can manifest in a number of different ways – think mood swings, anxiety, poor digestion, weight gain and various skin issues.
When I talk about self-care, I always start with the skin because it’s often a visible representation of what’s going on inside of the body. Dull, dry and flakey skin is often connected to high stress levels. Oily, acneic complexions can be attributed to poor digestive health and red, irritated complexions are often linked to chronic, systemic inflammation.
Although it may not seem obvious, one of my favourite ways to encourage skin health (and as a result, overall health) is with a consistent practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness is a wonderful beauty tool because it forces us to be still, to check in and to reconnect with ourselves amidst a world that loves to glamorize ‘busy’ and it works by addressing the underlying issues that can cause skin issues in the first place.
One of my favourite mindful beauty rituals is to get hands on with my skincare. With no other distractions, DIY rituals create space for you to breathe and decompress from the madness of the holidays and getting hands on with the textures and aromas creates a perfect environment for mindfulness. Notice how the sugar feels on your skin, how the scents of the oils create different emotional responses.
Stay present. Stay mindful. Welcome to your newest Woodlot ritual.
Lavender | Probably one of the most well known essential oils, and for good reason! Lavender is an adaptogen that works to give the body what it needs. Feeling low energy and tired? Lavender. Need to chill out? Lavender. Lavender is also hugely anti-inflammatory and is what’s known as a cicatrisant, meaning it helps to promote skin cell regeneration and wound healing.
Cedarwood | My favourite tree oil – cedarwood is a grounding, soothing treat for the senses that brings you right back to the forest floor. Perfect for those times you’re feeling stressed out, anxious or overwhelmed. Cedarwood is also a beautiful choice to help improve confidence and belief in yourself.
Bergamot | A citrus oil mainly found in Italy – bergamot is a beautiful choice because although it acts like many citrus oils to help uplift and create a more positive outlook, it does so without being overly stimulating.
Patchouli | Patchouli has a bad rap, am I right? Although we often think back to our parents’ choice of oils – patchouli was popular for a reason. It’s a super grounding, soothing option for crazy days and balances the nervous system with ease. It’s also a perfect option to help soothe dry winter skin!
