Woodlot Women - a deep dive into the world of female representation in beauty, through honest, real talk. We’re dedicated to sharing traditions of the past, to exposing stigmas of the present, and to inspiring hopes for the future.
To get the conversation started, we're getting up close and personal with extraordinary women from all different backgrounds to discover how their rituals have been inherited from the past, and will inspire the future.
Today, meet Calgary based creative, Kelsey.
I think we're the most beautiful when we're in flow. When we're chasing the things that bring us bliss. When we're ignoring the outside voices and focusing solely on what makes us happy. It might look different than it 'should' but ultimately you're in charge of your life, no one else. I think that contentment and belief in your individual path shines through and lights a face up!
Some of my favourite beauty products to elevate this flow include all-natural skincare (I've been using Woodlot's Nourishing Cleansing Balm
, Facial Oil
since launch!), a little bit of makeup (I don't wear much but love Jane Iredale, Juice Beauty, Harlow Skin Gloss
on cheeks and a swipe of lip balm to combat dry Calgary weather), and my favourite supplements to keep everything in check (Tonik ACV
is a current must-have).
I've always loved fashion and style and it's been interesting to see all of the different career paths I've had in my adult live merge into what I'm doing now, a combination of business, styling, beauty and health all rolled into one.
My favourite part of what I do is seeing a vision come to life - starting with an idea and then making it a reality. I'm inspired by so many different things, art, movies, travel, street style... anything and everything can be used to create something beautiful.
I'm also constantly inspired by the brands I'm so lucky to work with - all doing their part to leave this world just a little bit better than they found it.
As a creative I'm always looking for inspiration and expansion, and travel is truly one of the things that I find most powerful.
"We travel because we need to, because distance and difference are the secret tonic to creativity. When we get home, home is still the same, but something in our minds has changed, and that changes everything". –Jonah Lehrer,
For me, travel has shifted my mindset, and made me realize that things that I used to fixate on have no importance in the bigger picture. Travel has made my gratitude practice a non-negotiable and truly has changed me as a human being.
A few of my most memorable trips were to Guatemala, El Salvador, Brazil and Thailand. The colours, the community... and of course the sunshine!
Beauty is about so much more than what we look like on the outside, but I spent so many years worrying about my physical appearance - countless wasted minutes, hours, days and weeks obsessing about my skin or body shape or whatever the latest issue was. I didn't really notice a chance in my thought patterns until I started taking care of myself through fitness and nutrition (I'm a nutritionist by education) and realized it's hard to hate a body you're taking such great care of.
Now, I practice these wellness and beauty rituals every day because I know how much better I feel when I prioritize self-care. It looks different all the time, maybe one day it's a superfood smoothie or adaptogen elixir, the next it's a long, drawn out bath or facial massage. All I know is that these rituals have brought me immense peace of mind and have entirely shifted the way I speak to myself and what I see when I look in the mirror.
Thanks so much to Kelsey for sharing her experience and passion with us. We love connecting with the women in our communities and learning more about what inspires them everyday.
